As Washington continues to grow, many of our most beautiful areas are threatened with development. In addition, native ecosystems are receding, and important wildlife habitat and migratory pathways are being cut off. The Natural Areas category helps combat this by funding projects that protect wildlife habitat and rare geological features while also preserving public access for back-country recreation.
Project Highlights
This acquisition of 140 acres is under one ownership within the proposed Teal Slough NRCA. It offers a unique opportunity to protect a rare and ancient coastal cedar forest, old-growth Sitka Spruce and Western Hemlock forest, and a high quality salt marsh community. The property is confirmed habitat for Marbled Murrelets and Northern Spotted Owl. Other rare wildlife using the site includes Dunn’s and Van Dyke’s Salamanders, Vaux’s Swift and Pileated Woodpecker. The property is also used by a diversity of other species, including elk. The site is visible to Highway 101 travellers and is easily accessible for outdoor environmental education purposes.
