South Whidbey Aquatic Recreation Center Trail Loop

Category Overview

Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.

Project Highlights

South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District will use this grant to develop a public walking trail loop through woods and open lawn around the perimeter of a new public aquatic recreation center set for construction on South Whidbey Island, at an accessible transit-served location owned by the South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District equidistant from District population centers and within walking distance of our public schools. This trail will provide outdoor recreation opportunities for the more than 16,000 citizens who live on South Whidbey. The planned 1/3 mile trail oval will  be lighted to provide a safe venue for night walking and provide a linkage between two larger trail systems, one in South Whidbey Community Park and one in the adjacent Maxwelton Trails Park.  The trail loop is designed to meet community needs for healthy options for outdoor recreation and to address community feedback seeking both more trails and more linkages between trails. These grant funds will be specifically used for the preparation and construction of this loop trail and trail connections to adjacent trail system. The project also includes parking, signage, and landscaping.
