Category Overview
Urban Wildlife Habitat projects fund close-to-home places to play and explore nature. As our urban areas are increasingly expanding and densifying, these grants protect important fish and wildlife habitat within five miles of densely populated areas, creating green refuges that help keep our ecosystems healthy and provide places to enjoy nature right in our backyards.
Project Highlights
Kitsap County Parks and Recreation will use this grant to acquire up to 33 acres for the Illahee Preserve Heritage Park. The properties are in the Central Kitsap Urban Growth Area. The Preserve includes a salmonid watersheed, a wildlife preserve, and a system of non-motorized trails. There is an existing trailhead which has parking, kiosks, a picnic shelter, and interpretive signage. The primary conservation opportunity provided by this project is habitat protection.
