Category Overview
Forestland Preservation grants help improve opportunities for forest management activity and improve the long-term growth and harvest of timber. These projects help protect many different kinds of forests, including, but not limited to, large-scale industrial forests, small private landowner forests, community forests, and tribally - or publicly-owned and managed forests.
Project Highlights
Whatcom County will use this grant to acquire a forestry conservation easement on 610 acres of designated forestland on the Sanfi Acres – Canyon Creek property. This property is located 20 miles east of Bellingham, WA on Canyon Creek. The acquisition will remove 30 development rights and protect working lands in an area of increasing development pressure. The property owner wishes to continue working forestland uses on the property to protect working forests in Whatcom County. They also would like to use the property to educate the forest industry and community regarding forest management and forest health. Protection of this property also assists Whatcom County’s goal of supporting the rural economic base through natural resource-based industries, such as forestry, which is stated in the County’s Comprehensive Plan.
