Category Overview
Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.
Project Highlights
This is designed as the first phase of a three phase project, which is outlined in the city 2020 Comprehensive Plan. At present, McMurphy Park is 13 acres of fields, a gravel loop road, a small 6’x’6′ shed with electricity for security cameras, and three portable toilets located in high use areas. Vehicles park randomly on grass areas. Large family events, such as weddings, have taken place at the park. Based on previous RCO input and City Council reconsideration of the project, the initial phased implementation has been reorganized. This new first phase of development will focus on utility infrastructure by providing city water, a septic system, public restrooms and showers, and five RV sites. A 2″ city water connection and septic system will be added and sized to support this and future park use expansion. A new precast concrete restroom building will provide two multi-user public restrooms with four separate and individual shower stalls. Established gravel parking areas will be added at the new bathroom. The RV sites will be pull-through style and built to established state parks development guides. One RV site will have full hookups (the security camp host site), and the remaining four will have water and electric only. RV site rental revenue, at only 15% annual usage, will offset new city expenditures related to the increases in utilities and infrastructure upkeep. Next phases will see a large covered event shelter, a small playground, enhanced parking, and amphitheater.
