Category Overview
The State Lands Restoration and Enhancement category provides funding to two state agencies to help repair damaged plant and animal habitat. These grants focus on resource preservation and protection of public lands. Projects in this category help bring important natural areas and resources back to their original functions by improving the self sustaining and ecological functionality of sites.
Project Highlights
Work for this final report included The restoration of prairie and oak woodland habitat at Lacamas Prairie Natural Area. Weeds such as meadow foxtail, reed canary grass and Himalayan blackberry were controlled using prescribed fire, herbicide and mowing. Prairie restoration included the collection and purchase of native seed, cutting, pilling and burning and treating woody plants that were invading the prairie. Three prescribed fires (16 acres) were conducted to help control woody plants, and to prepare the site for herbicide treatment, seeding and planting. Collected and purchase seed were also planted in greenhouse pots for later out planting in prairie. We also have 12 garden beds that are used to propagate native seeds for prairie restoration. We also created 6, 30-40 foot earthen berms to block ditches that were created in the early 1900’s to drain the prairie. Himalayan blackberry, English ivy and shiny geranium were controlled in the oak woodlands.
