Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.
Project Highlights
The volunteer park project was completed by July 31, 2018, as described in the attached documentation. The completed project includes a full grass field with irrigation; walking path surrounding the perimeter of the park; a full parking lot; men’s and women’s restroom, including completion of sewage and storm water; drinking fountain; playground including all-inclusive structures that allow for all physical abilities to engage in play; misters in the center of the park; shade canopies; hard surfacing to allow for mobility on an off playground/parking lot/walking path with wheelchairs or walkers; wheelchair accessible benches and picnic tables; landscaping completed as well. Scope of the project remained mostly intact as the above mentioned items were completed; however, the project also included timeline extensions due to soil quality and weather. Due to the soil at the site, a SEPA review was required and dirt had to be cleared and turned over to rid the area of chemicals found on site. Because of this, the original target date of 3/31/16 to submit bid documents to RCO was extended to 8/21/16 due to the environmental work required to pass code. Because of mitigation timeline, this target date was then extended again to 1/12/17. On the progress report accepted on 12/01/16, the City provided documentation of the remediation plans to remove the soil. The following report, accepted on 3/24/17 showed the new target dates for awarded bid and hired contractor for 05/01/17. By August, 2017, soil remediation was completed, most of the work was done on the walkway and parking lot. The bathroom install was completed as well as gravel was laid and compacted for the playground preparation of installation of toys. Further, 95% of the irrigation installation was completed and the seeding for grass was started. Due to the cost for soil remediation, delay in starting construction, the increase in construction costs due to the delay, and the time of year, the originally proposed plan of including a gazebo, workout stations, and disc golf course were not completed during the timeline set by RCO. However there are plans to complete and install these in the near future. In late 2017, the majority of the work was completed on the project, however, weather created a stop-work situation until it improved. In early 2018, play structures and the surfacing was installed to complete the project. In May, 2018, the park was officially opened to the public. Minor work was done between May and July, 2018 to ensure the park was in complete and total working order.
