Middle Fork Ahtanum Trailhead and Trail

Category Overview

The State Lands Development and Renovation category provides funding to two state agencies to repair, renovate, and develop outdoor recreation facilities on existing recreation lands. As the popularity of outdoor recreation increases in our state, these grants help address overcrowding, ensure our outdoor amenities are safe for public use, improve visitor experience, and allow more people to enjoy our great outdoors.

Project Highlights

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) used this grant to construct a nonmotorized trailhead and trail in the Ahtanum State Forest (ASF), located approximately 25 miles west of Yakima, WA. This is the first designated nonmotorized trailhead in the ASF. The project allowed DNR to develop 7 miles of trail, parking, restrooms, a picnic shelter, picnic tables, fire rings, signage, plantings, and kiosks. The primary recreation opportunities provided by this project are nonmotorized trail uses, including equestrian, hiking, and snowshoeing.
