Colburn Park Phase 2 Inclusive Playground

Category Overview

Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.

Project Highlights

The City of Fife will use this grant to develop phase 2 of Colburn Park by installing play equipment to accommodate children with various physical abilities, construct a covered picnic shelter, and add parking (including ADA). Location Information: The project will occur at Colburn Park in Fife, Washington, outside of the Fife Aquatic Center. Overall Goal to be Achieved: This project aims to revitalize Colburn Park, nearly doubling its overall footprint and transforming it into a vibrant and inclusive community park that fosters social interaction, promotes wellness, and contributes to environmental sustainability. Primary Type of Habitat to be Protected or Restored: This phase of the project takes an existing maintenance yard and transforms it into a beautiful park. Native plantings and sustainable landscaping will create a more environmentally friendly and biodiverse habitat. Additionally, this land is currently a “heat island” with no trees on site. This project adds a tree canopy and additional shade structures. Primary Outdoor Recreation Opportunity to be Provided: This project’s primary outdoor recreation opportunity is establishing an inclusive playground within Colburn Park. This space will cater to children of all abilities, fostering social inclusion and active play. This will be the first completely inclusive play structure in Fife.
