Category Overview
Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.
Project Highlights
The City of Longview Parks & Recreation Department will use grant funding for improvements at a 2.14 section of Cloney Park, located within the city of Longview in Cowlitz County. The development project will include a fully inclusive playground, providing a welcoming space to gather and play that is not only accessible to those with disabilities, but physically, socially, & emotionally inviting to all. Supporting elements, including a new restroom and parking lot will be installed, as well as a large Picnic Pavilion and welcoming landscaping. The nature-based design draws from local heritage and incorporates traditional Cowlitz Tribe and lumber industry elements into the park’s play features. This project primarily provides an engaging, outdoor recreation experience with increased play opportunities for all abilities.Located in an area that is vastly underserved in fully inclusive and accessible outdoor recreation opportunities, the Cloney Park Inclusive Playground has been identified as a priority in the 2024-2030 Longview Parks & Recreation Comprehensive Plan and has widespread community support. The Cowlitz Indian Tribe has been involved throughout the design process, and local timber/paper product companies Weyerhaeuser and Smurfit Westrock support the project and have contributed donations to assist with matching funds.
