Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.
Project Highlights
Acquisition of 59.1 acres for a new community park in Puyallup’s South Hill area. The site is an old farm which has a 13 acre lake. Plans are to maintain the farm theme since it has historical and cultural significance for the area. This need was documented as far back as the 1988 Parks and Recreation Plan. The City Council, Park Board, and a Citizen’s Blue Ribbon Parks and Recreation Committee conducted a community survey to determine the public’s preferred activities. Acquisition and development of a community park was the highest priority. The preferred site was identified and a local bond issue was approved by the residents in 1997 by a 72% margin. Over 600 residents attended the public meeting held to begin planning for the proposed development. Future development of the park includes barrier-free facilities for all ages and interests – ballfields, fishing access, walking trails, picnic areas, interpretative sites, and an amphitheater/open lawn area. The legal description of the property to be acquired is as follows: The Northeast quarter of the Southwest quarter AND the South half of the Southeast quarter of the Northwest quarter of Section 3, Township 19 North, Range 4 East of the W.M., in Pierce County, Washington. EXCEPTING therefrom that portion conveyed to the City of Puyallup, for a 30 foot strip South of 104th Street East, by deed recorded April 29, 1996 under Recording No. 9604290138, records of said County. Situate in the County of Pierce, State of Washington.
