Category Overview
Washington is famous for its gorgeous and abundant waterways, from the Salish Sea to the Nisqually River, but many communities lack open public beaches and waterfronts where everyone can enjoy picnicking, swimming, paddling, boating, and angling. Water Access projects fund public shoreline access, boat launches, and fishing docks to create more opportunities for water recreation.
Project Highlights
The City of Tukwila will use this grant to improve water access to the Duwamish River at Tukwila Community Center Park. This project’s goal is to reimagine the river-facing side of the community center campus, transforming an area that neighbors the Duwamish River into one that interacts with it, allowing community members to gather in an environment tailored to recreating, enjoying, and interacting in a natural setting. This comprehensive redevelopment focuses on upgrades that will offer a multifaceted recreational and aquatic experience: – Trail Improvements & Boardwalk: Drainage, accessibility, fencing, re-planting, and other work will bring community members closer to the Duwamish – Canoe Launch: A regraded slope with new shoreline plantings will provide community members an easily accessible point for aquatic activities on the Duwamish – Log Jam Seating: A log jam seating installation will provide recreators a social gathering place alongside the Duwamish – River Overlook Tower: A new ADA-accessible lookout tower will allow community members to step over the Duwamish and enjoy its natural beauty – Picnic Areas: New covered picnic structures with structural pipe features will provide communal gathering areas and cold season play elements This development will revitalize an essential community asset and ensure it continues to foster enjoyment of nature and social cohesion, reimaging a vibrant public space that enriches the quality of life for all residents.
