Category Overview
Trails grants help communities and recreation areas fund the creation and improvement of trails for walking, hiking, cycling, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. These grants help make communities more livable, create regional trails systems, and open up beautiful outdoor spaces for people to enjoy. WWRP is the largest source of trail support in the state of Washington.
Project Highlights
This project will construct a critical link, establish a new access point, and extend the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT). The ODT is a multi-use non-motorized trail that showcases the beauty of the Olympic Peninsula. Once completed, it will span 135 miles from the Port Townsend Ferry Terminal to the Pacific Ocean. It is an important link in the Great American Rail Trail which will cross the entire U.S. This project links Anderson Lake State Park to the ODT and provides a new access point by enhancing an existing primitive trailhead at the park. Anderson Lake is a 490-acre day use park with a fishing lake, picnic area and 8 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. This project connects these areas and provides an opportunity for a mid-ride picnic or to explore lake-side trails. This past year State Parks received $350,000 from the legislature to design and permit this critical new connection to Anderson Lake. This work is currently underway providing an opportunity for this proposal to be a shovel ready project. Also, this project builds on the ODT trail work in process to the north of the park, funded by RCO in 2020. When completed it will allow the urban population of Port Townsend to access the State Park via 11 miles of trail. Recreational opportunities will include walking, running, bicycling, horseback riding, bird watching, and forest wildlife observing for trail users of all abilities and provide a welcoming experience for everyone.
