Category Overview
Farmland Preservation protects valuable farmland and habitat for recreationally important animals, like salmon, birds, deer, and elk. These projects allow families to continue farming the land they have worked on for generations, and provide Washingtonians with healthy local food and a diverse economy. WWRP is the only source of farmland preservation funding in the state budget.
Project Highlights
Firdell Farm, which includes 157 acres and produces seed crops, seeds, and forage was preserved through the completion of this grant by the purchase of three development that previously occurred on the property. It property includes a farmstead barn listed on the Washington State Heritage Barn Register. Cover crops are planted when possible to provide forage for wildlife as well as to improve soil tilth. This farm participates in agro-tourism and supports agricultural education through their “Cow Town” presentations. The Farm has provided hands-on tours and educational information regarding agriculture, particularly for children. Firdell Farm is extremely popular for birding due to its location off the Skagit Delta. This acreage provides breeding, foraging, resting and migratory over-wintering habitat for birds, including Snow Goose, Tundra and Trumpeter Swans, Great Blue Heron, and many species of ducks. It is also a priority area for Bald Eagles and hawks.
