Farmland Preservation protects valuable farmland and habitat for recreationally important animals, like salmon, birds, deer, and elk. These projects allow families to continue farming the land they have worked on for generations, and provide Washingtonians with healthy local food and a diverse economy. WWRP is the only source of farmland preservation funding in the state budget.
Project Highlights
This project allowed Snohomish County to purchase a permanent agricultural conservation easement on 23 acres of Willie Green’s Organic Farm, located two miles south of Monroe, Washington. The farm currently grows 50+ varieties of certified organic fruits, vegetables, and berries and wholesales them to Seattle-area restaurants and grocery stores. Willie Green’s Organic Farm also sells produce at regional farmers’ markets and through a winter CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) subscription program. The entire farm consists of Prime Farmland Soils as defined by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Willie Green’s Organic Farm is actively involved in riparian restoration projects and is certified as “Salmon-Safe.”
