Category Overview
Urban Wildlife Habitat projects fund close-to-home places to play and explore nature. As our urban areas are increasingly expanding and densifying, these grants protect important fish and wildlife habitat within five miles of densely populated areas, creating green refuges that help keep our ecosystems healthy and provide places to enjoy nature right in our backyards.
Project Highlights
Acquisition of land to provide permanent protection of two Garry (Oregon White) Oak savanna habitats, a wetland, and buffer areas, which support a variety of vegetation and wildlife species. The site is used by migrating waterfowl. Future development may include viewing platforms, parking areas, and trails. This is the last remaining wetland of this size in western Pierce County and it is historically significant because of Flett Creek and Flett Dairy. This proposal includes fencing the wetland habitat area owned by the College.
