Urban Wildlife Habitat projects fund close-to-home places to play and explore nature. As our urban areas are increasingly expanding and densifying, these grants protect important fish and wildlife habitat within five miles of densely populated areas, creating green refuges that help keep our ecosystems healthy and provide places to enjoy nature right in our backyards.

Project Highlights

This project acquired 884.74 acres of high quality habitat that linked Mica Peak Conservation Area with Liberty Lake Regional Park, creating a 5,300-acre block of contiguous public, protected habitat hosting moose, elk, pileated woodpeckers and other species less than five miles from the City of Liberty Lake and the City of Spokane Valley. The primary habitat conserved is forest habitat.

Location Details

From I-90 traveling east, take the Pines (SR-27) exit and head south on Pines (SR-27) for 10.3 miles. Turn left onto Belmont Road and drive east approximately 4 miles until you reach the Mica Peak Trailhead. Hiking directions are likely to change as the trail system is developed over the next two years and will be updated accordingly.

What is the WWRP

The Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP) is a state grant program that creates and conserves local and state parks, wildlife habitat and working farms. The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office administers WWRP grants, and the legislature funds the program.
