Category Overview
Trails grants help communities and recreation areas fund the creation and improvement of trails for walking, hiking, cycling, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. These grants help make communities more livable, create regional trails systems, and open up beautiful outdoor spaces for people to enjoy. WWRP is the largest source of trail support in the state of Washington.
Project Highlights
The City successfully acquired a parcel of land measuring 1.88 acres, located on the waterfront in Port Orchard to the east of the Rockwell Street Right of Way/Waterway. The trail easement that was initially described in the grant application was also acquired, however this was acquired using federal funds from a subsequently obtained grant and through a dedication as a requirement of a Shoreline Substantial Development Permit. The City now possesses all of the required property and easements needed to facilitate construction of Segment 3 of the Bay Street Pedestrian Pathway. This acquisition will allow the City to connect previously constructed portions of the Bay Street Pedestrian Pathway. Segment 3 will measure approximately 950 feet when completed, but will connect existing segments resulting in a nearly mile long continuous waterfront trail. The acquisition of this property also provides beach access from the trail to the water and connectivity to the Kitsap Peninsula Water Trail.
