Trails grants help communities and recreation areas fund the creation and improvement of trails for walking, hiking, cycling, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. These grants help make communities more livable, create regional trails systems, and open up beautiful outdoor spaces for people to enjoy. WWRP is the largest source of trail support in the state of Washington.

Project Highlights

The Jefferson County Public Works Department will use this grant to buy the remaining right-of-way needed and to develop the Larry Scott Trail from the Cape George Road area to the Four Corners area . The trail will be 10 feet wide crushed and compacted gravel surface that will accommodate multiple uses and be accessible to people with disabilities. A 4-foot-wide horse path will parallel the trail where conditions allow (very limited). A trailhead will be built at the south end of the trail corridor. The tralhead will include a main parking area with ten parking stalls, a secondary parking area for equestrian parking (horse trailers and tow vehicles), and a trailhead kiosk.

Location Details

To reach the project, proceed northwest from the Hood Canal Bridge on SR104 6 miles to the intersection of SR19. Turn north on SR19 for approximately 14 miles and continue through a signalled intersection onto SR20. After 2 miles more, turn left at the stoplight at Mill Rd, and immediately turn left again to head south on Discovery Rd and continue 0.6 miles to the intersection of Cape George Rd. Turn right and continue to the intersection with Crutcher Rd. Turn left on Crutcher Rd, continue to the intersection of Sand Rd, turn left. Continue to the intersecton with S. Edwards Rd, turn left. This brings you to the south end of the completed Rumage section of trail, where the north end of the Final Phase Project begins. It parallels S. Edwards Rd to the road's end, and continues south into the woods from there. To reach the south end of the project, backtrack to Discovery Rd and turn right (south). Follow Discovery Road for 1.9 miles, passing Douglas Way on the right. Continue for another .1 mile. The Trail will cross Discovery Road at this point; the trail easement continues east to meet the abandoned railroad grade along the east edge of the pasture and wetland on the left. Continue on Discovery Road an additional 2.1 miles to the intersection of Discovery Road with SR20, where the Final Phase Project ends at "Four Corners". To reach the To reach the end of Segment 4, backtrack 0.6 miles to Desicvery Rd and turn right (south). Follow Discvoery Rd 2.15 miles, passing Douglas Way on the right and to the edge of Chevy Chase Golf Course on the right. The Larry Scott Memeorial Trail crosses Discovery Rd at this point and climgs the grade on your left to the ridge above the pasture and wetland visible ahead of you on the left. To return to Port Townsend or the Hood Canal Bridge, continue straight ahead on what is now called Four Corners Rd until it intersects SR19. Turn onto SR19, right for the route to the bridge or left to Port Townsend.

What is the WWRP

The Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP) is a state grant program that creates and conserves local and state parks, wildlife habitat and working farms. The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office administers WWRP grants, and the legislature funds the program.
