Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.
Project Highlights
This project will complete the first phase of development at the Tosco Sports Complex. Through this grant two lighted ball fields and two soccer fields will be developed. Wetlands on the site will be enhanced and improved through the creation of ponds and plantings. An additional 150 parking spaces will also be provided. Currently, there are over 650 Ferndale youth participating in T-Ball, softball, and baseball and over 500 in soccer. This represents over 68% of all of the youth ages 6-16 in Ferndale. Last year, because of the condition and number of fields available, an estimated 54 adult and youth softball and baseball teams and 20 adult and youth soccer teams had to go to other communities to play. The need to develop sports field has been a priority in Ferndale since the late 1980’s as demand for facilities and population increased. The provision of safe, quality athletic facilities remains the cities highest priority. This project will allow increased opportunity for youth and adults to participate on safe, high quality recreation facilities and provide improved habitat for wildlife.
