Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.
Project Highlights
The City of Wenatchee used this grant to acquire 51.76 acres of natural open space, named Kenzie’s Landing. The City also constructed a trailhead on the site that includes paved vehicle parking with a van accessible space and electrical vehicle charging station, restroom, water yard hydrant and drinking fountain with bottle filling station, picnic shelter, security lighting and cameras, fire hydrants, fences and gates, signs, trash and dog waste receptacles and information kiosk. The property and trailhead provide permanent access to over 18 miles of existing trails in this section of the foothills. It preserves critical trail connections and provides access between publicly owned properties and the community, and provides improved accessibility and amenities. Not included in the project but adjacent and related to it, the City constructed a 1,000 foot long gravel temporary access road with storm water infrastructure to connect the trailhead to the end of the paved roadway on Maiden Lane until the road is extended to the site in the future. This project also helped to spur the donation of an additional 8.63 acres of property adjacent to Kenzie’s Landing.
