Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.
Project Highlights
This project is for the acquisition and development of a 2.08 acre parcel for a neighborhood park. Development will include playground equipment, park furniture, area lighting, shelter, pickleball court, tether ball, volleyball, landscaping, pathways and fencing. The undeveloped site is fairly level, and open with a few mature native trees. The site is located in the center of the Canterbury neighborhood on Kent’s east hill. The service area, which is primarily single-family residential housing, is bordered by several major arterials including James Street on the north, 104th on the east, and Kent-Kangley Road on the southwest. Residents of the Canterbury Neighborhood approached the Kent City Council with great concern for lack of recreational opportunities for their children and families in a safe, accessible location. Walnut Grove, a third acre lawn area with picnic tables is the only park within the service area. Parks located outside of the service area require the users to cross major arterials and are dangerous for participants to access. The acquisition and development of this site is important to the citizens and leaders of Kent.
