Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.
Project Highlights
Spokane County Parks, Recreation & Golf used these grant dollars to develop phase 3 of Bidwell Park, located north of the City of Spokane. Development actions included design and installation of several new features of the park, including a youth ball field. Due to clay soils encountered on-site, an extensive under-field drainage system was installed to help keep the field playable during periods of high precipitation. This project also included the installation of a new CXT building with two unisex bathrooms and an exterior drinking fountain with bottle fill. A 30′ x 30′ (approx.) picnic shelter was also installed, with metal framing, metal roof, and concrete pad underneath. An 8′-wide asphalt walking path was designed and installed, totaling roughly 1/3 of a mile in length (not including phase two paths). Benches, trash receptacles, bike racks, drinking fountain, trees & shrubs, grass turf, landscape boulders, and a full irrigation system were also installed. Utilities for water, sewer, and power were also installed to support various park activities. A nature-themed playground was designed and installed featuring a paved walking loop, log jumble, tipi features, tactile panels, spotted newt climber, and more. The playground surface material is a mixture of poured in place resilient safe-fall material and traditional EWF. Four sand volleyball courts with dark-sky compliant court lighting were also installed. Lastly, two new pickleball courts and a natural area were installed.
