Wards Lake Phase II Acquisition

Status
Funded in 2000
WWRP Applicant: City of Lakewood WWRP Category: Local Parks WWRP Grant: $250,005 Applicant Match: $250,005 Project Type: Acquisition County: Pierce  Legislative District: 29th

The City of Lakewood is working to acquire Wards Lake in two phases. The first phase, for 8+ acres, was in 1999. Phase II seeks to acquire an additional 12 acres. The City's intent for this site is to make it Lakewood's second community park. The site will provide a loop trail system, a group picnic area, a youth only fishing dock, playground equipment, a restroom, and access to natural and landscaped vegetation. Wards Lake is a very attractive wetland area with a variety of tree stands, including rare large oaks. Because Lakewood is 90% developed, it has very few opportunities for securing suitable additional open space for public access. At present, there are no public parks to serve the 9000 residents in this corner of the City; the closest park is nearly two miles away. The Wards Lake parcels are part of an estate. The heirs to the property strongly prefer that the site be converted to a park. Their willingness to sell the property significantly below the appraised value is an indication of their affinity for the property and their civic interest. An additional donation will be provided by owners of another adjacent parcel. These donations and purchases will help Lakewood minimize its park land deficit and provide a wonderful park facility for its citizens.

RCO Project Number: 99-1090

Location

Wards Lake Park will be located southwest of the I-5/84th Street Intersection. From I-5, exit at 84th Street (#128) and travel west. After passing the shopping center and the first apartment complex on the left, turn left onto Pine Street. Upon reaching a bordered up house and garage, you have reached the entrance to the proposed park.
