Chinese Reconciliation Park Phase 1

Status
Funded in 2005
WWRP Applicant: City of Tacoma WWRP Category: Water Access WWRP Grant: $554,221 Applicant Match: $554,402 Project Type: Development County: Pierce  Legislative District: 27th

The Chinese Garden and Reconciliation Park is a unique multi-phased waterfront development project on Commencement Bay in Tacoma. The critical first phase of the development includes beach restoration to provide a natural launch site for nonmotorized watercraft including a site for the annual dragon boat races. The beach restoration will also provide a natural wading area. A shower facility, picnic area, trails, asphalt non motorized ramp and large parking area will complement and provide support for these activities. Restroom facilities are nearby and will be added to this park at a later phase. The 2 mile Ruston Way linear, urban waterfront parks are heavily used year round by residents and visitors to the region. Long term plans provide for trail linkages between downtown Tacoma and Point Defiance with several trails extending through the gulches along Commencement Bay. When completed, this park will blend outdoor recreation opportunities with the historical recognition and reconciliation of the expulsion of the Chinese from Tacoma in 1885. In addition to this stand alone proposal two additional grants will be sought this year 1) An ALEA for shoreland trail extension and intertidal area development and 2) A Washington Heritage Grant for interpretive elements, decorative plaza and walkways. All grants are stand alone yet complementary. The two IAC grants provide critical overall site work that once completed will make foundation grants for the additional features much more competitive.

State Senators cherry pick projects, ignore WWRP rankings

The State Senate's proposed budget slashes Washington Wildlife & Recreation Program funding to almost half of what Governor Inslee recommended while favoring poorly ranked projects over highly ranked ones. The WWRP's independent ranking system is the key to its years of success, ensuring only the best projects get funded. Take action & urge your legislators to restore full funding today!

LWCF full funding bill reintroduced

Sens. Baucus (MT), Burr (NC), and Wyden (OR) & 4 cosponsors have introduced a new bill, the “Land and Water Conservation Authorization and Funding Act of 2013,” to provide full, permanent and dedicated funding for LWCF. Please join us in asking Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray to renew their support and once again co-sponsor the bill!
