Yakima Valley’s Outdoor Amenities Offer Huge Economic Potential

Coalition member Cowiche Canyon Conservancy is an important part of the outdoor economy in Yakima County.

Excerpt: “‘There’s an enormous amount of outdoor resources here,’ Yakima River Runners Club president Michael Aquilino said. ‘It seems to me that more and more people are getting out, but there’s kind of very little structure to it. Nobody’s promoting it. It’s just small user groups.’

A 2015 state study found Yakima County ranked seventh 
in Washington with nearly 
$670 million spent annually on outdoor activities and 10th with 5,398 jobs in the industry. But it falls among the lower half of counties when it comes to the number of residents participating in outdoor recreation or holding related jobs.”
