In Washington, Ranchers and Sage Grouse Have Coexisted For Years

On Tuesday, Sally Jewell, secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior, announced that listing of the sage grouse for protection under the Endangered Species Act was not warranted. With increased conservation efforts throughout the West, this decision comes as no surprise to ranchers.

Excerpt: “In Washington, “The reality is if they became listed nothing would really change, we would be doing the exact things we are doing,” Schroeder said. “We have had three decades of deliberate conservation of sage grouse management and recovery plans, so this is kind of a generational reality for us.”
