Farmland Preservation protects valuable farmland and habitat for recreationally important animals, like salmon, birds, deer, and elk. These projects allow families to continue farming the land they have worked on for generations, and provide Washingtonians with healthy local food and a diverse economy. WWRP is the only source of farmland preservation funding in the state budget.
This month’s featured project is Hannan Farm located on the ancestral land of the Chimacum, S’Klallam, Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla people. Jefferson Land Trust used this grant to purchase a conservation easement on the approximately 115-acre Hannan Farm, located in Jefferson County which will prevent subdivision and reduce future development of the farm, help the landowners reinvest in the farm infrastructure, and help ensure that the farm is affordable for the next generation of farmers. This acquisition preserves the prime agricultural soils on one of the largest historical working farms in the Chimacum watershed. The easement helps preserve approximately 2,000 feet of east Chimacum Creek, and approximately 3,000 feet of seasonal streams, and important salmon habitat.
