Urban Wildlife Habitat projects fund close-to-home places to play and explore nature. As our urban areas are increasingly expanding and densifying, these grants protect important fish and wildlife habitat within five miles of densely populated areas, creating green refuges that help keep our ecosystems healthy and provide places to enjoy nature right in our backyards.
This month’s featured project is Flett Creek, located on the ancestral land of the Puyallup people. The Clover Park Technical College used this grant to acquire 6.93 acres of land to provide permanent protection of two Garry (Oregon White) Oak savanna habitats, a wetland, and buffer areas, which support a variety of vegetation and wildlife species. The site is used by migrating waterfowl. Future development of this site may include viewing platforms, parking areas, and trails. This is the last remaining wetland of this size in western Pierce County.
