This month’s WWRP category is Urban Wildlife Habitat. These projects fund close-to-home places to play and explore nature. As our urban areas are increasingly expanding and densifying, these grants protect important fish and wildlife habitat within five miles of densely populated areas, creating green refuges that help keep our ecosystems healthy and provide places to enjoy nature right in our backyards.
Mica Peak is the Southernmost peak in the Selkirk Mountain Range. The summit has an elevation of 5205 feet and offers great views of Liberty Lake, Spokane Valley and the Palouse. While there is not yet a formalized trail system at Mica Peak, it is a popular destination for hikers, bikers, and equestrians.
The Mica Peak project will acquire 901 acres of high quality habitat linking Mica Peak Conservation Area with Liberty Lake Regional Park, creating a 5,300-acre block of contiguous public, protected habitat hosting moose, elk, pileated woodpeckers and other species less than five miles from the City of Liberty Lake and the City of Spokane Valley.
