Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.
This month, we’re excited to spotlight the ongoing improvements at Wards Lake Park, a beautiful green space located on the ancestral land of the Steilacoom, Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla peoples. Thanks to funding from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), WWRP Local Parks, and Youth Athletic Facilities grant programs, this project aims to transform the park into a hub for both recreation and conservation.
The enhancements planned for Wards Lake Park will have a lasting impact on the community, preserving critical wetland areas while providing a variety of recreational opportunities. Some of the key updates include:
- Wetland Restoration: Efforts to protect and improve the park’s vital wetland habitats will help maintain biodiversity and water quality in the area.
- New Play Amenities: A new asphalted pump track will provide a fun and challenging space for cyclists and skateboarders of all levels.
- Fenced Dog Park: A three-acre, fenced dog park will offer a dedicated space for pets to play and socialize, enhancing the park’s appeal for dog owners.
- Habitat Enhancement: The upland forest and native oak-prairie habitats will be restored, promoting the health of local flora and fauna.
- Accessible Trail: A new 1-mile accessible loop trail will allow everyone to explore the park, ensuring that nature is accessible to all.
- Pedestrian Safety Improvements: The park’s walkways and crossings will be enhanced to make them safer for visitors of all ages.
- Connectivity with Water Flume Line Trail: Enhanced visibility and connectivity to the adjacent Water Flume Line Trail in Tacoma will allow for a seamless outdoor experience across both parks.
This project offers a unique combination of active and passive recreation options, making Wards Lake Park a destination for people of all ages and interests. Whether you’re out for a peaceful nature walk, enjoying a bike ride, or playing with your dog, there will be something for everyone. At the same time, the project prioritizes habitat conservation, ensuring that the park continues to support the local ecosystem for years to come.
