Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.
Project Highlights
The City of Des Moines, along with our state, local, and tribal partners is thrilled that our Sound View Park project is complete. The road to get here was long, and not always easy – but we have a beautiful park and open space for community enjoyment to show for it! A timeline of our project is as follows: Oct 2021: Construction contract awarded for demolition of the structures on site. Continued partnership with KPFF, consultants, and City for additional site design work and planning prep. November 2021: Received a time extension for this grant, through December 2022. January 2022: • Fill was placed over most of the APE and all construction equipment worked from that base • House was demolished: foundation walls and base were left and filled with gravel, then soil • Garage was demolished • A high-level site development plan was shared, along with a preliminary timeline for construction January/February 2022: Deck platform framing and construction February 2022: Native plantings decided upon with tribal input/language March 2022: Carvers/Artists sought through partner Tribes. Continued work with Muckleshoot historian for translation and project components April 2022: Story Stones project complete May/June 2022: Sound View Park open for public enjoyment Summer 2022: Entered into contract with Muckleshoot carvers for agreed upon Welcome Figure. 2023: Continued communication with Muckleshoot for progress checks on the Story Pole. February/March 2023: Story Pole completion and installation. Plans for an “official” ribbon-cutting, opening celebration at the park are in the works.
