SunnyView Skatepark

Category Overview

Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.

Project Highlights

The proposed project is for the development of a Skatepark in SunnyView Park, midway between the towns of Sunnyside and Grandview on Yakima Valley Highway. The facility is planned to provide a free, safe and accessible location for youth in the Sunnyside / Grandview area to develop their skills in this noncompetitive sport. Sunnyview Park is owned by the City of Sunnyside, and is already equipped with soccer fields, softball fields, playground equipment, drinking water and handicapped accessible restrooms. This project has been in the planning stages for nearly six years and is ready to proceed. During that time Yakima County Parks Dept, City staff from Sunnyside and Grandview, the Lower Yakima Valley Rural Enterprise Community and dozens of community youth and adult volunteers have worked on fundraising, youth surveys, feasibility study development and consideration of liability issues. Professional skatepark designers met with local youth to get input on park design. The Skatepark will consist of a 100′ x 100′ concrete slab with five modular steel obstacles. The chosen design will allow for low maintenance, durability and periodic movement of the skating elements to provide a challenge for beginning and experienced skaters alike. Additional elements may also be added to the park in the future if desired.
