Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.
Project Highlights
Development of a neighborhood park to serve the Scenic Hill residential area on the east hill of Kent. The site, adjacent to Scenic Hill Elementary School, was identified in the 1982 Comprehensive Park Plan as a neighborhood park site which should be developed in conjunction with Scenic Hill School. The school is undergoing renovation, and as part of their plan, the School District will contribute the money to develop a 55 stall, lighted parking lot. Existing school facilities include ballfields and an outdoor basketball court. The five-acre site is a beautiful, natural area with many large douglas fir trees. In response to concerns of the residents the park will be developed to retain as many of the trees as possible. Development will be kept to the front 1/3 of the park along Woodland Way and will include picnic areas, tennis and basketball courts, a parking lot, shelter/restrooms and a children’s play area. Development in the remainder of the park will be minimal. The proposed trail system will provide controlled access to the remainder of the park. Where possible, these trails will follow the paths that have been worn in to the forest floor over the years.
