Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.
Project Highlights
As of July 31, 2020, all grant-related work required to convert the outfield of Field #3 to synthetic turf is complete. The new turf outfield (with new subsurface drain system), paid for with grant funds, was combined with the existing synthetic turf infield, previously completed by the Sponsor in 2016, to create a 300 ft. synthetic turf baseball/softball field. Field markings for soccer and lacrosse (soccer lines are colored yellow, lacrosse lines are colored blue) were inlaid in the outfield. The lacrosse markings were laid out in the “unified” dimensions that provide the same markings and dimensions for both women’s and men’s lacrosse. 2″ x 2″ markers identifying the outlines for youth football were installed, which allow the Sponsor to temporarily paint youth football fields as needed. The soccer/lacrosse/football markings span across into the central field’s outfield, previously converted to synthetic turf by the Sponsor in 2018, to create a full sized, synthetic turf, multipurpose field. A new sportslighting system was installed by the Sponsor to extend the daily hours of use, and provide public use throughout the “dark days” of Fall and Winter. To provide illumination uniformity, two of the new light poles had to be installed between the fields at the edge of the synthetic turf. The poles are 15 ft. away from the edge of the soccer and lacrosse fields, and do not interfere with baseball/softball play. The Owner has installed safety padding around the base both of them as an added precaution against injury. As part of this project, the Sponsor used capital improvement funds to convert the outfield of the complex’s third field to synthetic turf (with inlaid soccer and lacrosse lines matching the grant-sponsored outfield), and install new dugouts. With completion of the grant-funded work on Field 3, all three of the complex’s baseball/softball fields have new subsurface drainage systems, and have been fully converted from natural grass to synthetic turf. Combined with the new LED sportslighting system, the complex can fulfill the goal of the two RCO-awarded grants to provide full-sized soccer, lacrosse, and football fields for community use. The work was completed on time and all grant-related work was completed within the designated budget.
