As Washington continues to grow, many of our most beautiful areas are threatened with development. In addition, native ecosystems are receding, and important wildlife habitat and migratory pathways are being cut off. The Natural Areas category helps combat this by funding projects that protect wildlife habitat and rare geological features while also preserving public access for back-country recreation.
Project Highlights
This project secured 160 acres in the White Salmon Oak Natural Resources Conservation Area (a.k.a. Old Growth Oak), to protect representatives of plant community types that are quickly disappearing from Washington. Oregon white oak is dominant, mixed with areas of Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine, grasses, and scattered short shrubs. Popular and historic Weldon Wagon Road Trail traverses the site.
