The State Lands Restoration and Enhancement category provides funding to two state agencies to help repair damaged plant and animal habitat. These grants focus on resource preservation and protection of public lands. Projects in this category help bring important natural areas and resources back to their original functions by improving the self sustaining and ecological functionality of sites.
Project Highlights
The Department of Fish and Wildlife used this grant to restore over 600 acres of historic dryland agricultural fields in the Methow Wildlife Area, in north central Washington, to native shrub-steppe vegetation. This project was part of an ongoing effort to protect and preserve the ecological integrity of low elevation shrub-steppe habitat in the Methow Wildlife Area. Restoration included evaluation of each site for soil conditions, vegetation, habitat potential, and wildlife use before and after treatment; control of invasive weeds; seeding each site with native vegetation; and follow-up weed control and vegetation monitoring.
