Washington is famous for its gorgeous and abundant waterways, from the Salish Sea to the Nisqually River, but many communities lack open public beaches and waterfronts where everyone can enjoy picnicking, swimming, paddling, boating, and angling. Water Access projects fund public shoreline access, boat launches, and fishing docks to create more opportunities for water recreation.
Project Highlights
Pierce County Parks and Recreation Services Department utilized this grant to buy approximately 94 acres at the southern end of the Key Peninsula, known as Devil’s Head. The property has nearly 1 mile of high quality Puget Sound shoreline. The county plans to use the site for non-motorized boating, hiking, and beachcombing,and a wide variety of potential recreation opportunities for the community as well as protecting wildlife habitat. This property acquisition will conserve sediment supply and distribution, maintains water quality, and preserves other processes necessary for the long-term protection of salmon habitat.
