Category Overview
The State Lands Restoration and Enhancement category provides funding to two state agencies to help repair damaged plant and animal habitat. These grants focus on resource preservation and protection of public lands. Projects in this category help bring important natural areas and resources back to their original functions by improving the self sustaining and ecological functionality of sites.
Project Highlights
The Dabob Bay Natural Area Preserve (NAP) is located in the Tarboo Watershed in eastern Jefferson County north of Quilcene, on Hood Canal and the Olympic Peninsula. The NAP protects high quality coastal sand spits, estuary habitats and upland riparian forests. The project sites are located within the riparian zone of Tarboo Bay. Because what had been formerly thought to be fill turned out to be native soil, considerable funds were saved in not conducting this part of the proposed project. Also, while there were invasive plants near to the riparian zone of a small creek, the creek itself did not require the addition of channel structures, or restoration treatments along its shoreline. No holding nursery was established, and all plants were purchased from nurseries. No restoration areas were determined to be appropriate for revegetation with the Big leaf maple community mentioned above. Thus, this forest restoration project completed restoration of all 9 acres, including invasive plant control, site preparation, planting, mulching, installation of plant protection, and installation of large woody debris. This work was done in two major phases, with a follow-up phase of additional weed control and planting.
