Washington is famous for its gorgeous and abundant waterways, from the Salish Sea to the Nisqually River, but many communities lack open public beaches and waterfronts where everyone can enjoy picnicking, swimming, paddling, boating, and angling. Water Access projects fund public shoreline access, boat launches, and fishing docks to create more opportunities for water recreation.
Project Highlights
Mason County used this grant to acquire approximately 50 acres of property and complete the first phase of development for the new Coulter Creek Park. The property is located just north of the Town of Allyn, in Mason County. The acquisition included approximately 18 acres of upland forest and approximately 32 acres of wetlands, primarily tidelands and mud flats. The first phase of development included installation of a small parking area, restroom, pathways and signage. Use of the property is primarily for passive recreation, including to serve as one of the trailheads for the proposed North Bay trail. Additional access will be provided via the proposed North Bay Trail for pedestrians and bicyclists, or by water via kayak or canoe. The primary recreation opportunity provided by the project will be passive outdoor recreation.
