Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.
Project Highlights
The Tacoma Metropolitan Park District used this grant to create a unique nature-themed playground at the Tacoma Nature Center. The nature center serves a regional audience with more than 65,000 visitors annually. The playground, called the Children’s Nature Exploration Area, will serve children ages 2-12. It provides a wide variety of play elements all designed to mimic the natural environment. Play elements include recirculating pond, treehouse, climbing rock, snag climb, log slide, log crawl, picnic area and walking trails.
