Local Parks grants help protect these symbols of vibrant communities, providing places for families to gather and play and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in an era when people spend increasing amounts of their time inside. The WWRP is the largest source of local parks funding in Washington, helping communities fund the acquisition, development, and renovation of vital recreation areas and green spaces.
Project Highlights
This proposal is to acquire 0.19 acres of land to expand parklands available for future development of a Neighborhood Park. The residents of the Cascade View neighborhood voted to be annexed into the City of Tukwila in 1990. Unfortunately, King County neglected to plan for local parks in this high-density residential area. The nearest developed park is about one mile away, after crossing the five-lane Highway 99. The Park Plan public information gathering meetings identified that a park for the Cascade View Neighborhood was the most important park need in the City of Tukwila. City Council promised the annexed citizens (in 1990) that a park would be built for them. In June 2000, the City Council was finally able to authorize the acquisition of 2.18 acres for our park. One crucial 0.19-acre lot could not be purchased due to the seller’s and City’s financial situation. Currently, children are playing in the streets or in their apartments’ parking lots. The proposed park location is one of the only Cascade View areas without sidewalks. Everyone has to walk on the side of the street. A park pathway and street sidewalk will be constructed as part of the park development. This grant proposal to acquire the 0.19-acre Humiston Property will meet the number Park Plan priority, will fulfill an eleven-year old City Council promise, and most importantly, meet many recreational and safety needs of the neighborhood.
