As Washington continues to grow, many of our most beautiful areas are threatened with development. In addition, native ecosystems are receding, and important wildlife habitat and migratory pathways are being cut off. The Natural Areas category helps combat this by funding projects that protect wildlife habitat and rare geological features while also preserving public access for back-country recreation.
Project Highlights
The Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) used this grant to acquire 30.55 acres of meadow, ponderosa pine forest, streams, and Riparian Protection to protect rare plant populations within the Camas Meadows Natural Area Preserve (NAP). The acquisitions also improved protection of other rare plant and animal species on the site and enhanced site integrity by eliminating some private in-holdings within the NAP. This site is located in Chelan County 12 miles southeast of Leavenworth.
