Brown Dairy

Category Overview

Farmland Preservation protects valuable farmland and habitat for recreationally important animals, like salmon, birds, deer, and elk. These projects allow families to continue farming the land they have worked on for generations, and provide Washingtonians with healthy local food and a diverse economy. WWRP is the only source of farmland preservation funding in the state budget.

Project Highlights

Jefferson County and the Jefferson Land Trust, as co-grantees, acquired an agricultural conservation easement on the 50-acre Brown Dairy at the Chimacum crossroads. The Brown Dairy has been a working farm since the 1850s, with a long history of dairy production. The land is currently leased as pasture. The Brown Dairy includes an historic farmhouse, barns, milking facility, nearly 45 acres of prime pasture land, and about one-quarter-mile of Chimacum Creek. Protection of this historically significant farm adds to the viability of Chimacum crossroads as a hub of the local agriculture community. Grant funds were also used to install fencing to keep livestock out of Chimacum Creek, and approximately 2.5 acres of riparian buffer area were planted with native conifers and shrubs.
