GiveBig May 5-6

May 1, 2020

Of the lessons we’ve learned so far this year, perhaps our favorite is this—you can’t cancel generosity. In fact, generosity is flourishing in every corner of WA. From neighbors pitching in with grocery runs, to grandkids helping with yardwork, to strangers sharing gardening tips across social media, your generosity inspires us.

As we watch communities come together to support one another, we know it’s this collaboration and care that will see us through this crisis. And it’s up to us to harness this generosity to create a stronger Washington in the days and months ahead.

In this spirit of collaboration and generosity, we’re excited to participate in GiveBIG on May 5-6. While you’re probably already familiar with this statewide day of giving, there are a few important changes this year!

GiveBIG Washington has partnered with the global day of giving called #GivingTuesdayNow. What does that mean for you? You now have 2 full days (May 5 & 6) to support the nonprofits who keep your community thriving. Keep reading to find some other tips to make 2020 your most generous year yet:

  • Early giving is open! That’s right, you don’t have to set a reminder for May 5 & 6, because you can schedule your gift in advance RIGHT NOW.
  • Your gift goes further this year. Our generous board of directors has pitched in to match the first $8000 we raise through GiveBIG. That means your dollar this year goes twice as far for WA’s outdoors!
  • The federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act has changed tax rules to create incentives for charitable giving. A brief overview of these changes is below. Please contact your tax accountant or financial advisor for more information.

If you take the standard (non-itemized) deduction when filing taxes: Donors will now be able to deduct up to $300 in cash contributions to charitable organizations made in 2020. This will help to reduce your taxable income.

If you itemize your taxes: Donors can now get a deduction for charitable cash contributions up to 100% of their adjusted gross income (AGI). This expands the previous limit which capped deductions at 60% of your AGI. Let’s come together to show the world just how generous Washingtonians are. Let’s create enough space so that every community in Washington can find respite in our great outdoors. Let’s invest in the health of our green spaces today, so that we can thrive with nature long into the future.
