Yakima Valley to benefit from mental health, conservation funds in state budget

The Yakima Herald tallies up wins in the recently passed capital budget, including $85 million for the Washington Wildlife & Recreation Program (WWRP).

Lawmakers voted to approve $85 million for the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program, which provides state grants for preserving critical wildlife habitats, maintaining trails and restoring state lands.

Of the $85 million for the grant program, about $8.3 million would go for projects in the Yakima Valley area. A final list will be available in June, when the state Recreation and Conservation Office completes the process of ranking projects, said Communications Manager Susan Zemek.

Among the projects that could get funds are performing maintenance on more than 42 miles of off-road-vehicle trails and 12 campsites within the Ahtanum State Forest, as well as repairs to campgrounds, trails and boat launches within the Naches Ranger District.
