Description:

McDonald Park began as a volunteer effort to install a sports complex for the city of Colfax and the school district. Since 1994, over $187,000 in local donations, $340,000 in volunteer support, grants totaling $323,000 have provided a complex that is valued at over $2 million. Volunteer efforts have sustained the park from the beginning and will continue to upgrade the facility for years to come. Grants continue to provide materials with volunteers providing labor. The city and school commit $30,000 per year for maintenance and capital improvements. This grant will provide the additional support to install lighting for two of the fields. A $150,000 grant from the state legislature provided funds for light poles and fixtures and was purchased before the prices continued to rise. The installation will consist of holes 14 feet deep, sonotube, installing poles, concrete, wiring the poles underground and refurbishing the area around the poles. Volunteers and equipment are ready to lift the poles into place, install ditches, pour concrete, and an electrician will provide the wire and conduit at cost. Additional funding is needed to pay for the wire, Sonotube, conduit and concrete required and to install the remainder of the trees around the walking path. The park hosts many different age groups of soccer, baseball and softball from T-ball to semi-pro teams. Over 42 teams play in a typical year. WSU is the only baseball park with regulation lighting in the county. Other lit parks are 60 miles north or 50 miles south.
