Eagle Point Acquisition
The proposed acquisition site would provide a unique addition to Shelton's parks and recreation opportunities. Consisting of an easy shallow cove for launching canoes or kayaks into Oakland Bay, Eagle Point would provide the only water access park in the City of Shelton's park inventory. Eagle Point will meet the top three community desires, including water access, walking trails, and nature trails and further the goal of meeting the level of service standard for park land detailed in the City of Shelton's Parks ansd Recreation Comprehensive Plan. Acquisition of Eagle Point will provide the first and olny public water access to Oakland Bay withing the City of Shelton. This prime waterfront property will be developed if it is not acquiored for publci shoreline access. The community has strong ties to the bay, as it is the sole reason Shelton was established in 1890. At present time, very limited public access is available on Shelton's waterfront due to indsutrial uses by Simpson Timber Company/Green Diamond Resource Company and Manke Lumber Comany operations. The 14 acre tract includes 1600 feet on Oakland Bay and more than 4 acres of tideland thatis host to shellfish and important foraging habitat for cohoc, steelhead, and cutthroat salmo that spawn in Goldsborough Creek. The natural wooded setting also offers opportunity for beach combing, picknicking, viewing marine wildlife, marine traffic in and out of Shelton's historic waterfron, and wonderful views of Mount Rainier.
