Status
Funded in 2003
WWRP Applicant: Kennewick Parks & Rec Dept WWRP Category: Local Parks WWRP Grant: $98,648 Applicant Match: $98,648 Project Type: Development County: Benton  Legislative District: 8th

This project continues development of Kennewick's lineal park in Zintel Canyon. Initial construction will include 1,900 linear feet of a hard surfaced eight-foot wide walking, jogging, leisure-cycling and nature trail. The trail is located along Zintel Canyon, a ravine in the heart of the city. Irrigation water that runs down the canyon six months of the year has created a unique wetland in this arid climate. The walkway will open the canyon up for all to enjoy this beautiful, natural area. The ultimate plan is for expansion of the trail to 1.5 miles, with landscaped areas at each end with picnic sites and trailhead signs. The present proposal includes construction of the trail, picnic sites, a playground, parking, and other park amenities. A local volunteer group has signed a license agreement to adopt the canyon for development and maintenance. Over the last five years the volunteers have donated about 1,000 hours of labor annually. They have committed to help with this project by building a picnic shelter.
