Yakima River Access At Thorp

Status
Funded in 2001
WWRP Applicant: Dept of Fish & Wildlife WWRP Category: Water Access WWRP Grant: $53,670 Project Type: Acquisition & Development County: Kittitas  Legislative District: 13th

This project involves the protection of about 900 lineal feet of shoreline along the Yakima River near Ellensburg. Shoreline development, agriculture, and the construction of dikes and levees have significantly compromised the functions of the riparian ecosystem. Few remnants of the naturally functioning flood plain remain in the Thorp area of Yakima River Basin. This project acquires 7 acres and develops an unimproved boat and raft take out about three miles above Ellensburg's diversion dam. Watercraft must currently portage around the dam or attempt to negotiate the drop which can be dangerous under some flow conditions. An unimproved ramp and small graveled parking area at this site would provide safe access and additional river recreational opportunities while ensuring the protection of the riparian area.

RCO Project Number: 00-1462

Location
